Bill Gates Agrees
Bill Gates (Yes, the Bill Gates of Microsoft) recently
contributed a rare op ed article where he expressed concern that “Too few young
people are acquiring the knowledge they need to use technology in creative and
innovative ways.”
Bill goes on to say that, “We can all help address this
issue. As parents, we must help our children appreciate the joys of learning
and discovery. Teachers and educators must find ways to teach science and math so
it is relevant and exciting.”
Of course we at Brainwaves agree! Why not choose a fun educational toy for each
child that you are close to, and encourage him or her towards a greater
knowledge of science and math? It’s a
cornerstone of the skill set required to succeed in the future.

Educational Toys as Christmas Gifts
As a smart kid, some of my favorite Christmas gifts were educational toys that reinvented themselves each time I had the chance to play.
I remember getting a "150 in one" electronic kit where I could build 150 different electronic projects. I was also enthralled by mechanical toys that could change shape and function. Even as a young child I was amazed that I was allowed to play with the tubes and chemicals that came in a chemistry kit or a microscope (the magic tricks were my favorites).
The other factor that made these cool toys a lasting favorite was that mom or dad could get interested as well. This made play time much more fun, and in some ways probably had something to do with my choice to open an online educational toy store.

Children's Botique For Girls and Guys
On the internet, you can find the most amazing things for your little ones.
Take for example the “Daddy Diaper Bags”! Who would have thought? But it makes sense. If you were a “daddy” wouldn’t you feel kind of odd carrying a pink pastel diaper bag? At Pink Taffy Designs they have manly diaper bags that would make any daddy proud.
You must check out their personalized gifts as well. The “Princess Kyra Banner” is something every little girl should have above their bed. For the little boys in your life you can have personalized Baseball hats made with their name on it or even a Jungle Safari Wall Hanging for their bedroom wall. This store isn’t just for girls but boys as well so don’t let the word “Pink” in the title scare you off if you have a little boy.
The ideas are endless and the products they carry are intriguing and beautifully done at Pink Taffy Designs. Check them out at www.PinkTaffyDesigns.com and tell them Brainwaves Educational Toys sent you!

Unique Toys From Aunt Jean
Unique Toys From Aunt Jean
My Great Aunt Jean would occasionally blow into town, taking a brief break from her world travels to visit my sister and me. Aunt Jean brought us the most unique gifts, toys and puzzles that might have been from South America, or from up the street in San Francisco – we could never really tell. Two things made the toys from Aunt Jean special. First, my parents usually disliked them.

Educational Toys, Video Games and ENRON
Educational Toys,Video Games and ENRON
I was watching CBS 60 Minutes and they had an article on Echo Boomers. A prominent professor and pediatrician was told by a fortune 500 executive that the thing that struck him most about the new generation coming into the workforce, was their lack of long term vision. He said that they treated business like a video game, where if they didn?t see instant results, then it wasn?t of interest.
I couldn?t help but think of the Enron scandal, where earnings were fabricated to meet the expectations of the market. I know those involved in Enron are of an earlier generation, but are we teaching similar behaviour through video games.
Educational toys have always been a mainstay of my children?s fun and games. We often use science kits and science toys as fun activities on a rainy day. My children are still impulsive, but they are also prepared to make sacrifices for something that excites them.
Educational toys may not be the solution to all the world?s problems but I think they are a good place to start.

Educational Toys that Count!
Brain Waves, the Intelligent Toy Store. We pride ourselves in providing truly educational toys, learning toys. Some of these are science toys, some are brain toys. All good educational toys I've experienced require work to be beneficial. That's why alot of our cool toys are science kits that require assembly. You can have a very cool robot, as long as you can build it. The same with a metal detector or strobe light. Want some gooey slime that glows in the dark? Create it with an exciting chemistry set. Want a medieval castle? Build it out of real bricks and mortar. Science toys and educational toys don't magically become brain toys but they open up vast opportunities, and that makes them intelligent toys.

Brain Toys or Intelligent Toys are toys that utilize left brain logical thinking. This can be a kit that requires step by step assembly or better yet like Meccano that requires design, planning and building. Chemistry sets are good Brain Toys. Making a link between action and reactions. Kids need a well rounded experience of activities. With new technologies, there are so many cool toys out there.

Science Toys
Science toys and Educational toys are toys that require a logical series of steps based on observation and decision making. Science toys can be traditional chemistry sets and electronic kits, or more modern technology like DNA and forensic kits to solar technology kits. Educational toys should have a large component of fun, but lead a child to discover further. With educational toys, you may build a castle out of bricks and mortar, build a real catapult, then research when and how these tools were used. Science toys and educational toys are just the starting point of a lifetime of learning.

Educational Toys Come in from the Cold
My son Jack and I took some time out from playing with the educational toys he received for Christmas and went to a hockey game over the holidays. His favorite part is when the Zamboni comes out to clean the ice, like a big science toy. Jack said, ?Why is there smoke coming out of the back?? It?s steam I told Jack, they use hot water because it freezes faster. I could see him comparing this to his other educational toys and science kits. ?But ice is cold, shouldn?t they use cold water, Dad?. Well, there was only one period to go and a thousand questions, so I told Jack that when we got home we would do our own science experiment to see whether hot or cold water froze faster. To get the most out of this I thought we should treat it as a science project. I looked through some of the science toys Jack had and found a science kit that showed how to do some experiments. We also searched the internet to see if there were any educational toys that might help us. We didn?t find any educational toys, but we did find that there were 3 physical processes that would explain why hot water freezes faster. First, hot water contains less dissolved air. Secondly, in a pool of warm water, the hot water would rise creating a larger temperature difference with the air and cool the water faster. Third, the warm water would initially melt the ice on the ground, forming a better bond that would conduct the cold better. So we began our science project by filling up 2 plastic cups each half full, the red one with hot water and the blue one with cold water. It was 18 F so we went in to warm up. We came back out an hour later. The 2 cups were mostly water. The red one had some ice above the water line and the blue one had some ice on the outer edge of the water surface. We weren?t sure what our science kit proved but we rushed back inside, wrote down our observations, drew a few pictures and had some hot chocolate before bedtime. Jack was going to explain his science experiment to his class on Monday so they could see how much fun educational toys can be.

Winter Educational Toys
Educational Toys ? WOW
I took my family to Winterfest this past weekend. Science North, a science museum had an interactive workshop, we had to go.
It was a good thing no one told the kids these were educational toys, it may have quieted the shouting, laughter and astonishment. The amazing science kits ranged from building bridges to exploding candy. The kids had to push aside the parents to get their turn playing with some awesome science toys.
What I notice when kids play with science toys is the enthusiasm, the team work, the competitiveness that exudes. These aren?t just educational toys, these are life lessons. And the level of parent participation and encouragement was heart warming.

Educational Toys Take a Vacation
Educational Toys Take a Vacation
I walked to pick up my kids from school, another successful year of sports, educational toys and activities having been crossed off my list. Summer vacation was upon us and I was elected camp director for 2 months, having met the stringent requirement of a heartbeat and not being present for the vote.
Some may have been amused by the conspiracty, certainly the Cheshire cat grins on Jack 5, and Charlotte 7 were a clue, but the ear plugs and aspirin my wife gave me along with the first aid kit made me feel like the petrified slave awaiting his fate in the Collisseum tunnel in the move Gladiator.
